La Liga 2024-2025 Transfer Market Rules

1. Transfer Window Dates

  • Summer Transfer Window: Opens on July 1, 2024, and closes on September 2, 2024, at 23:59 CET.
  • Winter Transfer Window: Opens on January 2, 2025, and closes on January 31, 2025, at 23:59 CET.

2. Registration Rules

  • Maximum Squad Size: Clubs must maintain a first-team squad of no more than 25 registered players.
  • Homegrown Player Requirement: At least 8 of the 25 players must be homegrown, meaning they have been registered with a club affiliated with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for three seasons between the ages of 15 and 21.
  • Non-EU Players: Clubs are allowed a maximum of 3 non-EU players in their squad. However, players from African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries are not considered non-EU due to the Cotonou Agreement.

3. Financial Fair Play (FFP)

  • Spending Cap: Clubs must operate within the spending limits set by La Liga, which include transfer fees, player wages, and agent fees. These limits are determined based on each club’s revenue and financial health.
  • Salary Cap Compliance: Clubs are required to submit detailed financial reports to La Liga, demonstrating compliance with the salary cap. Failure to comply can result in sanctions, including fines and transfer bans.

4. Loan Rules

  • Domestic Loans: Clubs can loan players to other La Liga clubs, but the loaned player cannot play against their parent club.
  • International Loans: There are no specific restrictions on the number of players a club can loan internationally, but FIFA regulations on loan duration and player development must be followed.
  • Loan Fees and Options: Clubs can negotiate loan fees and include options to buy at the end of the loan period.

5. Player Contracts and Transfers

  • Contract Registration: All player contracts must be registered with La Liga and comply with the league’s regulations on minimum wage and contract length.
  • Transfer Agreements: Transfer agreements between clubs must include all details such as transfer fee, payment structure, and any sell-on clauses. These agreements must be submitted to La Liga for approval.
  • Release Clauses: Spanish law mandates that all players in La Liga have a release clause in their contracts. This clause sets a fixed price that another club must pay to buy the player outright.

6. Youth Transfers

  • Protection of Minors: La Liga strictly adheres to FIFA regulations regarding the transfer of players under the age of 18. Transfers of minors are only allowed under specific circumstances, such as family relocation or within the EU.
  • Youth Player Development: Clubs are encouraged to focus on the development of homegrown talent through their academies. La Liga supports initiatives aimed at improving youth development and reducing reliance on foreign imports.

7. Transfer Deadline Day

  • Final Day Operations: On transfer deadline day, all deals must be completed and submitted before the 23:59 CET deadline. Clubs often engage in last-minute negotiations, but all paperwork must be finalized and submitted to La Liga on time to ensure the transfer is valid.
